Cleaning codes for upholstery fabrics
When selecting upholstery fabric, it’s important to understand how to care for it properly to ensure lasting performance and appearance. In the furniture industry, cleaning codes are standardized indicators used to describe the safest and most effective ways to clean fabric without damaging its structure or finish. These codes are especially important for end users, retailers, and designers when specifying fabric for high-use environments.

Code S – Solvent-Based Cleaner Only
Fabrics with a Code S designation should be cleaned using dry-cleaning solvents only. Water or water-based cleaners can leave stains or damage the fabric. To spot clean, gently blot the stain using a clean cloth and a solvent-based upholstery cleaner. Always follow the instructions on the cleaning agent and test in an inconspicuous area first.
Ideal for: Fabrics that are sensitive to moisture or made from synthetic fibers like polyester, rayon, or acetate.
Code W – Water-Based Cleaner Only
Fabrics labeled with a Code W can be safely cleaned with water-based upholstery cleaners, mild detergent, or foam cleaners. These fabrics are typically easier to maintain and are better suited for homes with children or pets.
Ideal for: Durable, tightly woven fabrics that resist water-based staining.
Code WS or W/S – Water or Solvent Cleaners
A WS cleaning code offers the most flexibility. These fabrics can be cleaned with either water-based or solvent-based products, depending on the nature of the stain. Spot clean using a mild detergent or dry cleaning solvent, and be sure to test cleaning solutions in a hidden area.
Ideal for: Everyday use in residential or commercial settings where occasional spot cleaning is expected.
Code X – Vacuum or Light Brushing Only
X-coded fabrics are more delicate and should not be cleaned with water or solvent-based cleaners. Maintenance should be limited to vacuuming or gentle brushing to remove dust and dirt. Any attempt at spot cleaning could result in staining or damage.
Ideal for: Decorative or specialty textiles with delicate finishes or structures.
